Spotify Announces Artist Input in Personalized Recommendations
Here’s what you need to know
Spotify has been reliant on artists for a long time for opportunities to connect with their listeners through the platform. Considering everything Spotify takes into consideration for its music "discover" services, it makes sense to include artists and labels in that process. — So, they’ve decided to run a test of possible new service to give artists a say in how their music is being discovered.
In this new experiment, artists and labels can identify music that’s a priority for them, and our system will add that signal to the algorithm that determines personalized listening sessions… this allows our algorithms to account for what’s important to the artist.
Key Details from the announcement:
- Accessible to artists at any stage of their careers.
- No upfront budget required.
- Will only apply to the algorithm that determines radio and autoplay.
- Labels or rights holders have to agree to be paid a promotional recording royalty rate for streams in personalized listening sessions.
- If the songs resonate with listeners, they’ll keep trying them in similar sessions. If not, they’ll be removed.
If the test goes well, Spotify will expand the test into other personalized areas of the platform. For now, we’re excited to see how this benefits artists and listeners alike.
